December 7th

First of all, thanks everyone for coming on Friday! The dance went very well, and pictures will be up shortly.

The halls look FANTASTIC due to all the hard work you put in to decorating them!

(John Leyba, The Denver Post)

Rudy Carey got his 600th win! Congrats!

Ski club is organizing a trip to Copper mountain on Jan. 24th. We would like to charter a bus that will leave from East. Contact Ms. Perkins for moro info or to RSVP.

Thanks to Green Club for hosting the guest speaker.

The members of senior council feel they need to work a little bit harder on community projects so they have decided to start with coat and hat and glove drive beginning on Monday. If you should have any gently use coats they can be dropped off in room 100 where they will be delivered to a local shelter. We are looking for new, inexpensive hats and gloves.

Also, the East Ping Pong Club is looking for an unwanted, but functional ping pong table or two. If anyone is looking to create some space in their house the members of this club are willing to pick it up and take it off your hands.

The Boys and Girls Basketball Teams are collecting toys to deliver to children at Denver Health. Please bring a new toy to the boys' home game on December 9th, or any other home basketball game.

SUPPORT EAST DINE IN OR OUT AT ANNIE'S CAFE on TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9th - ALL DAY. Annie's is now located at 3100 East Colfax ( Colfax and St. Paul ). You can place your order any time of the day and the Speech and Debate Team will get a portion of the receipts if you mention East Speech and Debate.

Congrats to the speech team, who got 5th this week without any debaters, and to the basketball game, who got 2nd at the Thunder ridge tip-off.

December 4

Congratulations to:
Beth Hinz, Colorado Coach of the Year
Zach Bolden, Player of the year,
Zach Bolden, Grant Simon, All Colorado-team
Honorable mention: Sharod Dadgar, Zach Grossnickle, Adam Schrieber

* Zach Bolden realizes everything is going to change for him next season. A junior at Denver East, Bolden helped the Angels capture the Class 5A soccer championship last month, scoring a team-best 26 goals along the way

By winning the title, Bolden helped East change its reputation as well. No longer will the Angels be considered a good team from a weak league. Now, East has to be included in the discussion of the state's elite programs

"It's really going to be interesting to see how teams come at us next year," said Bolden, the Rocky's All-Colorado player of the year. "Before, when teams outside our league played us, they kind of dismissed us because they didn't think the (Denver Prep League) was very good. Now that we proved what we can do, they're probably going to be gunning for us to try to see what they can do against the state champs."

Denver East's Beth Hinz is the All-Colorado coach of the year for the second time in her career.

The boy's home opener is on the 9th, and check this out from the Rocky Mountain News:

DENVER PREP LEAGUE

Favorite: Denver East

Contenders: Denver South, Lincoln, Montbello, George Washington

Key players: Miftah Ali, Denver South, 5-8, Jr.; Isiah Cooper, Montbello, 5-8, So.; Tino Dressler, Denver South, 6-4, Sr.; Bryant Durant, Denver South, 5-8, Sr.; Sean Edwards, Montbello, 5-11, Sr.; Quentin Hildreth, Denver East, 5-10, Sr.; Danny Rodriguez, Lincoln, 5-7, Sr.; Roderick Taylor, Montbello, 6-6, Jr.; Da Vaughn Thornton, Denver East, 6-5, Sr.; Troy Wiese, Denver East, 6-4, Sr; Dominic Williams, Lincoln, 6-4, So.; Sean Williams, Lincoln, 6-4, Jr.; Amal Wilson, Montbello, 6-5, So.

Outlook: State champions from the two largest classifications now get to compete on the same level, with Lincoln moving up from 4A to challenge defending 5A champ Denver East. The Lancers graduated almost every starter from its team, though, while Denver East at least brings back its top scorer in Da Vaughn Thornton and Troy Wiese, a top outside threat who improved greatly before last season. Denver South has all five starters back and another five letter-winners, so coach Adam Kelsey certainly has a lot of experience as the Rebels move up from 4A. Montbello and George Washington both graduated their best players, and the Warriors still look pretty young. However, there is enough developing talent on both teams to make it an interesting fight behind the Angels.

Also, we were ranked as the number two team preseason in the state by the Rocky Mountain News and NUMBER ONE by the Denver Post. This should be an interesting season, to be sure. As they say, third times the charm.
